Breaking Into Cyber 2026: Your Roadmap to a Cybersecurity Career

This section runs from 1:07:37 to 1:09:25 in the full video above, with foundational philosophy from 26:22 to 27:18. Feel free to watch now or let it play through to the next topic.

I need to talk about this because I’ve lived it.

I burned out. Hard. I was building the meetup group, creating workshops, teaching at colleges, running a summer cyber camp for high schoolers, running Cover6 — and sometimes when you don’t handle the takeoff right, you crash. I got pulled into being a caretaker, took some time off, and honestly — the time off felt good.

Now I’m back, and I’m not going back to the way it was.

Someone asked me about my study method. Here it is: I take the cord out of my laptop. When the laptop dies, I walk away. That’s it.

When you’re in the grind and it’s flowing, you don’t want to stop because you’re accomplishing things. But if you forget that you’re in the grind, you can get trapped in it. The only thing that’s going to pull you out is pain — chest tingling, numbness in your legs from sitting too long, weight gain, forgetting to drink water, skipping the gym.

You don’t want that. Pace yourself. You have time. This isn’t a sprint.

Treat your journey like a 401K. You’re not going to be a millionaire on day one. All you have to do is contribute. Learn something every day — watch a YouTube video, listen to a podcast, read an article. That’s your daily contribution. Over time, the compound interest on your knowledge is going to snowball. Then one day you’re going to look around and realize you’re actually pretty smart. And it’s going to feel amazing.

What you’ll take away:

  • Burnout is real — recognize the signs: stress, weight changes, skipping exercise, physical symptoms
  • Pace yourself with the “cord-out” method — set boundaries and actually take breaks
  • This is a marathon, not a sprint — compound interest applies to knowledge too
  • Daily small contributions beat exhausting bursts — consistency wins long-term

Something to think about:

What’s one boundary you need to set right now to protect your mental health and energy for the long journey ahead?
