Breaking Into Cyber 2026: Your Roadmap to a Cybersecurity Career

This section runs from 47:58 to 50:06 in the full video above, with additional resource recommendations from 25:29 to 26:19. Feel free to watch now or let it play through to the next topic.

You don’t need to figure this out alone. There are incredible creators and resources out there. Here are the ones I personally recommend:

For Beginners:

  • Cover6 Academy — You’re already here. Free courses plus affordable practice exams for Security+ and Network+. cover6solutions.com/courses
  • TryHackMe — Hands-on, browser-based learning with guided paths. Start with the “Complete Beginner” path. Free tier available.
  • Professor Messer — Free video courses mapped directly to CompTIA certification objectives. Security+ and Network+ content is excellent.
  • Network Chuck — Good beginner-friendly content across networking and cybersecurity topics.

For Intermediate / Hacking:

  • IPPSEC — Hacking tutorials, particularly great for learning how to approach Hack the Box machines.
  • John Hammond — Above beginner level, but amazing work. Security research, CTF walkthroughs, and tool demos.

For Daily Consumption (Your 401K Contributions):

  • Johannes Ulrich — SANS Internet Storm Center Stormcast — A 3-to-5 minute daily podcast covering what’s happening in cybersecurity right now. This is like your daily deposit into your knowledge 401K.
  • Brad Duncan — MalwareTrafficAnalysis.net — Wireshark packet analysis. If you want to learn how to read network traffic, this is the place.

For Career Changers:

  • Alyssa Miller — Her talk on transferable skills is a must-watch if you’re transitioning from another industry.

Community Resources:

  • Cover6 Discorddiscord.gg/x7MXS3yMqb — Study groups, career advice, exam wins, and direct access to the community.
  • Cover6 Meetup — Free virtual sessions, every other week. meetup.com/dccyberwarriors
  • Reddit — r/cybersecurity, r/netsec, r/CompTIA
  • BSides Conferences — Find your local BSides at bsides.org. Free or low-cost, great networking.

All of this together is your capital for your knowledge 401K. Watch a YouTube video. Listen to a podcast. Read an article. Something every day. Over time, that compound interest is going to pay off tremendously.

What you’ll take away:

  • Start with beginner resources: Cover6 Academy, TryHackMe, Professor Messer, Network Chuck
  • For intermediate learning: IPPSEC and John Hammond offer advanced content and research
  • Daily consumption: Stormcast and MalwareTrafficAnalysis are your “knowledge 401K contributions”
  • Community is critical: Discord, meetups, Reddit, and BSides conferences connect you with peers and mentors

Something to think about:

Which of these resources appeal to you most as a starting point? How can you commit to a daily “knowledge 401K contribution” habit?

– Tyrone
