Breaking Into Cyber 2026: Your Roadmap to a Cybersecurity Career

This section runs from 23:44 to 25:06 in the full video above. Feel free to watch now or let it play through to the next topic.

Before we even talk about specific cybersecurity roles, I want you to think bigger for a second.

I wrote an article a while back called “Identifying Your Dream Job,” and it comes down to three things: something you’re really good at, something you love to do, and something the world needs. When those three circles overlap, that’s your dream job. And it doesn’t have to be in cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity may not be for you, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re good at it, it’s going to come easy. If you love it, your passion is going to shine through your work. And if the world needs it — well, there’s going to be demand.

Here’s what I mean. Maybe you love cars. There’s an entire car hacking village at DEF CON in Las Vegas. People make careers out of studying the Bluetooth mechanisms that unlock car doors, analyzing the camera systems in Teslas, researching LiDAR technology. They get to rent awesome cars and find vulnerabilities. That’s a cybersecurity career built around a passion for automobiles.

Maybe you love gaming. E.D. Barrett is a millionaire — the man just plays Madden. Someone else I know took their love for gaming and opened an e-sports arena. The point is: find what you love, find the cyber angle, and go after it.

So sit down and really think about those three things. It could change everything.

What you’ll take away:

  • The Venn diagram framework: something you’re good at + something you love + something the world needs
  • Cybersecurity can align with any passion — automotive, gaming, healthcare, finance, etc.
  • Your dream job might not be traditional cybersecurity — but the cyber angle exists in almost any field
  • Intentionality about alignment leads to fulfilling and sustainable careers

Something to think about:

What’s one thing you’re genuinely good at, one thing you truly love, and one thing the world actually needs that relates to your skills? Where do those three circles overlap for you?
