I need to give you the real talk that nobody puts in the brochure.

The best part of this career? It’s the people. The mission. Knowing that what you do actually matters. When you find your “why” in this field — and you will find it — it fuels everything. The late nights studying, the certs, the grind. You’re not just collecting a paycheck. You’re protecting people. Protecting businesses. Sometimes protecting entire communities. That hits different when you internalize it.

But I’d be doing you a disservice if I only told you the good parts.

Some of what you’ll encounter in this field is heavy. If you go into digital forensics or incident response, you may be exposed to deeply disturbing content — things that don’t leave you when you close the laptop. Child exploitation material. Evidence of violence. Scenes from the worst moments of someone’s life. And nobody prepares you for that.

I’ve talked to people in this field who carry PTSD. Real PTSD. Not from combat — from what they’ve seen on the job. That doesn’t get talked about enough, and it should.

I’m not saying this to scare you out of the field. I’m saying it because you deserve to go in with your eyes open. If you know this going in, you can make informed choices about which roles you pursue, set up the support systems you need, and give yourself permission to ask for help when it gets heavy.

This is a powerful career. But it comes with weight. Know the weight. And know you don’t have to carry it alone.
