Breaking Into Cyber 2026: Your Roadmap to a Cybersecurity Career

Sometimes you need to be a remora fish.

If you don’t know what a remora fish is — they’re the little fish that follow big sharks around the ocean. You might wonder, why doesn’t the shark just eat them? Because the shark is busy doing other things. But here’s the secret: the remora fish never goes hungry. They eat when the shark eats.

In your career, you need to find your shark. That’s your mentor. Someone you look up to, someone who’s already where you want to be. Follow them. Learn from them. Be useful to them. And they’ll make sure you never go hungry.

A mentor doesn’t have to be formal. It doesn’t require a signed agreement or a scheduled monthly call. It can be as simple as following someone’s work, engaging with their content, showing up at their events, and asking smart questions. Over time, they’ll notice you. Over time, opportunities flow.

One thing I’ve observed: the best mentors don’t go around announcing that they’re mentors. They just help people. And the best mentees don’t wait to be invited — they show up, do the work, and the relationship forms naturally.

What you’ll take away:

  • Find your “shark” — a mentor who’s already where you want to be
  • Mentorship doesn’t require formality — follow their work, engage, show up, ask smart questions
  • The relationship forms naturally when you’re visible, useful, and genuinely interested in learning
  • When you’re close to your shark, you benefit from their success — you never go hungry

Something to think about:

Who is one person in cybersecurity whose work you admire? How could you start engaging with their content or showing up where they show up, authentically and without pressure?
