Identifying Your Dream Job by Tyrone E. Wilson

Finding a job in cybersecurity can be life-altering. For some, it is a lot easier than others. I’m here to help identify if cyber is for you; if so, then let’s figure what’s best for you.

On many occasions, I get asked how to break into the cybersecurity industry. Often, I’m more than happy to help out. Our meetup group started having a Breaking into Cyber meet up once a quarter. In due time, we’ll even create a web page that will have great strategies, educational references, and advice from industry veterans. Before I start to help, I always like to ask them this question; What is your dream job? I ask this because no matter how much I would want it to be, I understand #Cyber may not be for everyone. If this industry is not for you, that is perfectly fine. A few years ago, I had a great conversation with Mr. Tom Fish. We met because I started attending small business networking events. We connected at the event and, as per usual, decided to have lunch together. While at my office, he first introduced the topic of a dream job. It’s something I always thought about but had no idea what my dream job would be. He then asked me these three questions:

• What are you good at?
• What do you love doing?
• What does the world need?

After another 20 minutes or so of in-depth conversation and explanation, I realized that I had found my dream job. If you ask yourself these same questions and give it some thought, you too can do the same. Once you put the answers together, I feel that is the profession you should pursue, especially if you have the time. The reason I say this is because it’s something you’re good at so it will come quickly to you, you love to do it so it won’t feel like a job and your audience will see your passion shining through, and lastly, it is something the world needs so the demand will be there. The combination of these three aspects is a recipe for success. Although we focus on information security, I feel you can still incorporate cyber to help your dream job come to fruition and even enhance what you’re already doing. 

As a child, I wanted to be a politician, but for the last 20 years, I knew Information Technology is the field I wanted to attain. Thank you, Tom, for helping me solidify what I’ve always known. As I began to focus and follow through on this realization, I’ve been able to accomplish a multitude of goals. I’ve organized meetup groups in three different states, sat on panels at cyber conferences, been interviewed on television by famous figures, been able to grow an #InfoSec company, and I have been self-employed for quite some time now. Lastly and the most fulfilling part is I’ve been able to bring lots of people together to educate the masses and improve their lives. I’m good at speaking to crowds of all sizes, I love using my experiences to be a positive influence, and there are lots of people in the industry that still yearn for knowledge. For the moment, my Dream Job is clear. Now it’s time to identify yours so you too can gain and maintain a fulfilling life. #C6S
