Overview
Your home lab does not need to be expensive. The goal is to build a functional practice environment where you can run virtual machines, generate traffic, and simulate real attacks and defenses — all on hardware you already own or can acquire inexpensively.
Minimum Hardware Requirements
For a basic lab running two to three VMs simultaneously, you need a machine with at least 8GB of RAM — 16GB is better. A modern multi-core CPU (Intel Core i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen equivalent) is sufficient. Storage-wise, an SSD with at least 100GB of free space will make your VMs significantly more responsive than running on a spinning hard drive.
A laptop that is a few years old with upgraded RAM can serve as an effective lab machine. Many practitioners run their labs on refurbished ThinkPads or Dell Latitudes that cost well under 00.
Virtualization Software
Virtualization software lets you run multiple operating systems on a single physical machine, isolated from each other. The two most common options for home labs are VirtualBox (free, cross-platform) and VMware Workstation Player (free for personal use on Windows and Linux). Both will run Kali Linux, Ubuntu Server, and Windows VMs without issues.
